Epilepsy can cause various ear related symptoms such as sensorineural hearing loss as well as auditory processing disorders. This occurs due to the effect of epilepsy to the neurological structures which is involved in hearing. Hearing loss and auditory processing disorder as a side effect of epilepsy is usually permanent in nature and requires intervention by an audiologist.

A certain type of uncommon epilepsy occurs with sound features. This disorder causes seizures usually characterized by sound-related (auditory) symptoms such as buzzing, humming, or ringing. Some people experience more complex sounds during a seizure, such as specific voices or music, or changes in the volume of sounds. This epilepsy is referred to as Autosomal dominant partial epilepsy with auditory features (ADPEAF) and is an uncommon form of epilepsy that runs in families.
Some people with ADPEAF suddenly become unable to understand language before losing consciousness during a seizure.

my partner suffers from grand mal seizures. Recently he had a seizure and now has non stop echoing in the ear. What could have happened in that seizure to make the echoing appear and not stop? THANK YOU FOR YOUR INFORMATION THAT YOU PROVIDE.
Hi Angela, seizures can have multiple effects on the hearing organ and nerve/brain structures involved in hearing. It would be a good idea to have an in depth audiological assessment to determine what the effect of this seizure was on his auditory system.

Thank you, i had 5 seizures last week, my hearing is strange at the moment I was wondering if this could have something to do with it. Reading this it might have.

My daughter 16 ,is diagnose with Juvenile Epilepsy two months ago she had seizures over a time of (1 10 months ago and 3 2 months ago)but was also diagnose with severe hearing loss at the age of 4.
I want to know is the hearing was caused by the epilepsy because it is genetic?
She is on Epitec and Redilev meds now

The hearing loss might well have been caused by the epilepsy – but there are numerous other causes that could have contributed – in some cases it is very difficult to determine exactly what.
